Testing Methods

Seed for all yield trials is prepared for planting in randomized complete block designs by our research staff at Romney. Plots are over-planted 10 - 20% and later thinned to the desired plant population. Cooperators prepare the seedbeds and apply fertilizer and herbicides.

Plots are harvested with a Gleaner K plot combine equipped with the Omnidata Harvestmaster system for plot weight and moisture determinations. Three replications are combined and used for yield determinations. The fourth rep is harvested by hand and conditioned on the ear to 13.5 + 0.5% moisture in a room maintained at 70° F and 70% RH. The samples are then shelled and stored in glass jars prior to popping in a Cretors MWVT test popper.

Statistical analyses are conducted on all data prior to its presentation in this format.

Terms and Definitions

Adjusted % Mean:
The average of a hybrid's yield and expansion relative to the whole plot average in percent adjusted for a difference in range observed between yield and expansion.
Expan:
Volume of popped corn measured in cubic centimeters per gram of unpopped corn (cc/g). All popping data was collected using a Cretor's M.W.V.T. popper.
Yield:
Pounds of shelled corn per acre adjusted to 13.5% moisture.
Mois:
Grain moisture in percent on the day of harvest.
Popln:
Number of plants per acre.
Lodge:
The percentage of plants that were broken below the ear on the day of harvest.
K/10g:
The number of kernels in 10 grams of popping corn.
Mush:
Percentage of popped flakes exhibiting a ball or "mushroom" form.
Hull:
A measure of hull breakage and dispersal during popping, rated on a scale of 1 - 5. A rating of one is the hulliest corn, while a five has relatively few hulls.
MW Expan:
Volume of popped corn measured in cubic centimeters from microwave tests. Microwave tests were 62 g of corn, 30 cc corn oil packaged into pillow-type microwave bags.
UPK:
Weight of unpopped kernels in the microwave test at Romney.
