NEW SOYBEAN VARIETY

A new soybean variety was released from the Purdue University Agriculture Research Programs in 2006 for nonexclusive licensing for commercialization, CL0J095-4. The use of the code letters "CL" in the name of this variety was taken from the breeding strain designation system used by the USDA Uniform Soybean Testing System of the Northern Midwest Region. This cultivar was developed for the non-GMO soybean market with support from the Indiana Soybean Alliance and the USDA-ARS.

The CL0J095-4 cultivar was developed as an F3 plant selection from the cross CX1705R-108*Dwight. CX1705R-108 is an experimental line with 49% protein developed by Jim Wilcox at Purdue University. It came from the cross CRS7C1-13-1*Savoy. CX1705R-108 has the Phytophthora resistance genes Rps1b and Prs3a. Dwight, which was developed by the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Illinois, was released because of its resistance to soybean cyst nematode (SCN), derived from P188788, and higher yield compared with SCN-resistant varieties of similar maturity.

CL0J095-4 is an indeterminate line classified as early Group III maturity (rm 3.1) with purple flowers, tawny pubescence, tan pods, seeds with gray hila and a dull seed coat. This line is segregating for the Rps1b gene for Phytophthora root rot resistance and is moderately resistant to sudden death syndrome (SDS) caused by Fusarium solani. CL0J095-4 showed moderate resistance to SDS in the 2005 Regional SDS Variety Trial and is moderately resistant to SCN phenotypic Race 3.

The release of CL0J095-4 last year brings to three the number of non-GMO varieties released from the Purdue soybean breeding program in the last two years. Limited amounts of seed of these three cultivars are available now from the Ag Alumni Seed Agricultural Improvement Association, Inc., in Romney, Indiana.

CL0J095-4
3.1 Maturity, purple flower, tawny pubescence, gray hilum, 43% protein, 20% oil, indeterminate, segregating for Rps1b gene for Phytophthora root rot resistance, moderately resistant to SDS, good standability, about 1 inch taller than CL0J173-6-2.

CL0J173-6-2
3.0 Maturity, white flower, light tawny pubescence, black hilum, 42% protein, 20% oil, indeterminate, Rps3a gene for Phytopthora root rot resistance, moderately resistant to SDS, good standability, about 2 inches taller than CL0J173-6-8.

CL0J173-6-8
3.0 maturity, white flower, light tawny pubescence, black hilum, 42% protein, 20% oil, indeterminate, Rps3a gene for Phytopthora root rot resistance, moderately resistant to SDS, good standability, about 2 inches shorter than CL0J173-6-2.
